The Biden Foundation & It’s On Us Announce Biden Courage Awards
Vice President Joe Biden to join awards event on April 18th honoring student heroes who have stepped in to stop sexual assault
NEW YORK – March 20, 2018 – It’s On Us and the Biden Foundation will host the Biden Courage Awards in New York City on April 18, 2018. The Biden Courage Awards will celebrate student heroes who are working to stop sexual assault. Vice President Biden will participate in the event.
“The young people honored at the Biden Courage Awards embody the mission of It’s On Us as we strive to build a student-led movement to combat sexual assault,” shares Tracey Vitchers, Director of It’s On Us. “As we honor and highlight these changemakers, our goal is that others will be inspired to follow in their footsteps.”
Vice President Biden founded It’s On Us with President Obama in 2014 to fundamentally shift the way we think and talk about sexual assault and engage young people to stand up on their college campuses and communities. In 2016, Biden hosted the first Courage Awards at the White House which honored students who spoke up to stop sexual assault.
“The #MeToo movement further demonstrates the importance of individual voices in changing the culture of sexual assault,” said Lynn Rosenthal, Policy Director of Ending Violence Against Women at the Biden Foundation. “This year, the Biden Courage Awards will shed light on students who are contributing to the ongoing dialogue on how we can successfully combat sexual assault on college campuses and in our communities.”
The Biden Courage Awards forwards the joint mission of the Biden Foundation and It’s On Us to change the culture of violence and make college campuses safer for all by engaging young men, teaching bystander intervention, and mobilizing the next generation of movement leaders to put an end to the epidemic of college sexual assault. It’s On Us is dedicated to working with students across the country, lifting up their voices, and providing the training and resources they need to prevent sexual assault on campus. The Biden Foundation continues Vice President and Dr. Biden’s lifelong commitment to ending violence against women, providing support to students changing the culture on their campuses and elevating their work to bigger audiences with an opportunity to scale.
The Biden Courage Awards are sponsored by Major League Baseball, Match Group, Telemundo, the NFL, Association of Fraternal Leadership & Values, Everfi, Coca Cola, Elle Communications, Mekanism, and The Creative Alliance.
